LIMA, Peru, September 9, 2009 – The Dominican
Republic started with a total dominion over
hosts Peru in the nightcap of Day One of the II
Final Four Volleyball Women’s Cup played before
more than 3,000 fans at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum.
The score of the Dominican victory was 25-14,
25-22, 25-13.
The representative of NORCECA controlled the
first set without major problems, and in the
second battle against the strong opposition from
the Peruvians but the effective blocks of
Annerys Vargas and Lisvel Eve combined with the
attacks of Milagros Cabral and Prisilla Rivera
gave Dominican Republic the chance to come back
and dominate the set.
In the eventual last set, the Caribbean squad
was superior, this combined with the weak game
of the home team.
“We had a good start in our game with lot of
concentration because we knew we were facing a
good team with a great support from the fans,”
said Marcos Kwiek, the Dominican Republic coach.
“I think our service was dominant and that
helped the good work made by our blockers.”
Milagros Cabral, the captain of Dominican
Republic, said to be satisfied with the job done
by herself and also by her teammates. “We worked
well but I think we started somehow cold in the
second set. Our goal is to be in the best shape
possible for the final match and add to our
preparation for the NORCECA Championship.”
Leyla Chihuan, the captain of Peru, explained:
“We have seen all, how a superior selection
dominated us. We must change our collective
mentality and work harder. We can’t continue
with this rhythm in preparation for the World
Championship in Japan.”
